Lunchcafe Blom, Amsterdam NL

2 Aug

One day for lunch I walked thru the streets for a while before I came upon a cafe who’s entire front of the restaurant was opened up making it a sort of inside/outside restaurant which was cool to see and made for a nice ambiance.

The name of the place was Lunchcafe Blom and they are located at Nieuwendijk 117-119, 1012 MD Amsterdam
Website:  http://lunchcafeblom.nl/en/

For a good cup of coffee, cappuccino or espresso, a nice lunch and the best sandwiches, and even an English breakfast.
Everything is made fresh from the finest ingredients.

For today’s lunch I had their club sandwich with smoked salmon, scrambled egg, chive and mayonaise and to wash it all down I had a lemon soda, not to be confused with lemon-lime soda aka sprite.

Ristorante Savini, Amsterdam NL

1 Aug

While working in Amsterdam I dined out nightly at the local restaurants.  There were many great ones to choose from, all featuring authentic dishes to their ethnicity – it was foodie nirvana!

This night I dined outside at an Italian restaurant called Ristorante Savini, Cucina Italiana.

Located at Spuistraat 1D, 1012 SP Amsterdam, their website can be viewed at http://www.savini.nl/eng/index.php

Dining around 9pm is uncanny in Amsterdam as it does not get dark until 10:30-11pm. The late afternoons seem to never end, which is a good thing.

Tonight I had the beef carpaccio and house penne pasta with Italian sausage.

Worthy Brewing in Bend, Oregon

5 Apr

In case you were not aware, there are a lot of breweries in Bend, Oregon.

You’ve probably heard of Deschutes Brewery and maybe 10 Barrel, Good Life, Cascade Lakes Brewing, Boneyard, Solstice, Silver Moon or one of the other of the many breweries in Bend. There are a lot.  Personally, I’ve been to nearly all of them over the past year while traveling for work in the area, it’s been fun exploring the culinary scene there.

Well, I have to tell you that now, there’s a brand new brewery that just opened in Bend – called Worthy Brewing Company and I have to note that it is now #1 in my book for best  Brew Pub in Bend Oregon.

Worthy is located at 495 NE Bellevue Drive, Bend, Oregon http://www.worthybrewing.com/

This brewery and restaurant are a sight to see, it’s a large industrial modern building with an outdoor raised bed hop garden, hop green house, a full scale brewery and a very nice restaurant section.  The wood rafters and the bar top in the restaurant are all made from recovered wood from an old insane asylum in Oregon where the movie “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” was filmed.  So right from the start, this place already has built-in history, that’s pretty cool.  Needless to say the ambiance is outstanding.

Hop Garden

They have a very good seasonal chalk board beer menu at Worthy. They not only serve their own beers, which are all very good, they also have guest taps with other beers and ciders from all over the west.

Beer List

The food is what really pushes this place to #1 from day 1. It is outstanding! They have a really nicely tiled wood fired pizza oven that they use to make great tasting pizza’s and entree’s.  I’ve been there 4x’s so far and every thing I’ve eaten has been excellent.  Some of their pizza’s have a wow factor with their creativity using a melding of delicious ingredients with a great tasting wood fired pizza crust.

Irish Pizza

To round it all out, service was impeccable.  I could not have asked for anything better.  My beer glass never ever sits empty, and my food is always served promptly.

Two big thumbs up for Worthy Brewing Company!

Fat Rabbit Public House

20 Feb

Decided to head over to The Fat Rabbit Public House on Sutter Street in Old Town Folsom for lunch today.

Needless to say I was not disappointed. I had the pieorgies appetizer and the special of the day, catfish tacos.

The food was very good and tasted great washing it all down with a Belgian White style beer called Hoegaarden.

Two thumbs up, I really like this place!

36 Handles Pub & Eatery, El Dorado Hills CA

28 Dec

36Handles

Richard Righton has done it again! The owner of the successful Bidwell Street Bistro in Folsom, and Relish Burger Bar in El Dorado Hills has opened his 3rd restaurant (nearly next door to Relish) called 36 Handles Irish Pub & Eatery, and from our first visit I can tell you right now that Richard has done it again – this place is great!

36 Handles is an Irish Pub with an upscale decor that is noticeable as soon as you see the ornate wood red and black doors at the entrance. Upon stepping inside it’s like being transported to Ireland, this place truly has the look and feel of an authentic Irish Pub – it’s very nicely done with excellent quality furnishings and interesting wall hangings. The bar itself is a sight to behold, you don’t see really cool large wood bars like that very much anymore and this one is great, and very well equipped.

The staff and the service deserve special notice because we could not have wished for better service then we received at 36 Handles on our first visit today, simply put – the service was outstanding.

From the minute we sat down at our table in the bar area, we were handed menus and a minute or two later we had our drink orders in. Our waitress was very attentive and had a really great attitude. I’ll discuss the food later, for now I want to tell you more about the great service. My wife’s order of fish and chips came out wrong, she ordered panko crusted instead of traditional but that was no problem and did not end up being an issue, in fact it helped us experience another level of service that is sometimes awkward. Our waitress immediately took care of the mix up and promptly kept us informed on the status of the order every few minutes and she even brought over a plate of fries until the new order of fish and chips arrived. That mix up was easily forgotten when getting to experience this kind of top notch service.

The beer list is great with lots of excellent choices of beers of all types, and what’s really amazing is that for an Irish BEER Pub, they have a pretty good selection of good wines too! My wife enjoyed a nice Hess Chardonnay while I had a Kroenenbourg beer.

Photo from 36 Handles Website

The menu has a nice selection of traditional pub fare and more. For food I tried the Corn Beefed Reuben Sandwich made of marble rye, corned beef, white cheddar, braised cabbage, whole grain & served with pub fries. My wife had the fish and chips with Cod (there are 3 choices of fish) and she had it panko style (it’s also served traditional style).

My wife and I have had some pretty good fish and chips at another local restaurant lately, so that was what we used as a benchmark to measure how well 36 Handles makes their fish and chips. The results were immediately recognized, the fish and chips at 36 Handles BEAT the competition! The flavor was outstanding, the sauce amazing and the fish was cooked absolutely perfectly, very nice and flaky and tasty.

36 Handles, has it all – great ambiance, great service AND great food – two thumbs up here! We will be back – often!

Al’s #1 Beef, Chicago Il

26 Dec

My uncle JD, a life long Chicagoan, gave us a tour of Chicago a few years ago while we were there and for lunch one day he took us all to famous Al’s #1 Italian Beef.

Stepping inside was like stepping back in time where the ambiance and food is exactly the same as it has been for the past 25+ years. Their specialty is their roast beef dipped sandwich, they also sell Chicago hot dogs and tamales and a few other items.

Everything here is classic and tasty. Don’t plan to sit down, though, there are no chairs and tables here, just a counter to lean on, but its fun.

Water Grill in Los Angeles

16 Dec

I had the extreme pleasure of dining at the Water Grill in Los Angeles on company business while in Southern California this past week. The ambiance, service and food were absolutely fantastic.  The best way to describe this restaurant is to refer to their website which offers the following  definition and industry reviews.

Water Grill is the ultimate example of fine dining in Los Angeles. Hailed as “the best seafood in Southern California” by the internationally recognized Zagat Guide, Water Grill has consistently offered dazzling fish preparations of superior quality and freshness.
“…Each element on the plate is a standout, yet together the flavors are married to perfection in a harmonious presentation inspired by nature.”StarChefs

Inspired, adventurous and inventive sums up the Water Grill. Praised by Zagat Survey as Los Angeles’ top seafood restaurant since the day it opened, Water Grill has become an institution of excellence. In service, food, presentation, décor, ambiance and overall guest experience, this Downtown favorite exceeds all expectations.” Downtown LA Dining Magazine

“Warm deco stylings inspire the gleaming luxe raw bar, with intimate booths tucked on one side and a lively, airy dining room on the other accented with auburn wood, marble columns, white tablecloths, cushioned chairs and booths. Theatergoers, investment bankers and downtown-based tourists comprise the lively crowd.”  City Search, LA

My dinner started with Wild Fijian Big Eye Tuna Tartar with thai red chili and green papaya

The entree was a delicious Wild Columbia River Sturgeon pan roasted with horseradish cream, toasted walnuts, and roasted beet risotto.

To top it all off, desert was a divine Tahitian Vanilla Creme Brulee’ with Orange Cognac Caramel, Mandarin Orange Sorbet and Cardamom Churros.

To drink we had a great Frogs Leap Chardonay from Napa and at desert I tried a Yalumba Tawny Port from Australia that was very nice.

Blue Nami in Folsom

15 Dec

My wife and I enjoy good sushi and we’ve been many times to a variety of the local sushi restaurants in Folsom.

Recently a new sushi place opened in the new Palladio Mall in Folsom, called Blue Nami. I hadn’t had a chance to try them out yet when recently my good friend Tom told me about his experiences there and highly recommended I try the place out, he said not only was the food great, but the prices were outstanding.

So the next opportunity I got, my wife and I ventured over to Blue Nami in Folsom at the new Palladio Mall and we were impressed as soon as we stepped in the door. The decor was really well done and very unique. We were immediately seated and met with our waitress soon after.

We checked out the menu and found that all their house rolls were 50% off, all the time. They have a great menu with some very good combinations. We tried several different rolls and enjoyed each and every one. Everything was delicious and tasted fresh. Our waitress was very attentive and helpful with our selections.

The bill was the best part, the total cost was literally half of what we’ve been paying everywhere else, AND the food was all good and fresh.

We look forward to going back soon to try more of their sushi rolls. Two thumbs up for Blue Nami

Prix Fixe at Back Wine Bar and Bistro

6 Oct

Back Bistro, 25075 Blue Ravine Rd. #160, Folsom

Last week my better half, Mrs Burrell, and I tried out the new Prix Fixe Tuesday menu at Back Wine Bar and Bistro and we had a great time enjoying some very delicious culinary creations.  Every thing we had was perfection, we highly recommend trying Back Wine Bar and Bistro very soon.

September Prix Fixe Tuesday Menu (with photos below),

Course 1 consisted of Homemade gnochi puttanesca with tomato, capers, olives, garlic, tomato and oregano.
We really enjoyed the rich bold flavors of this appetizer.

Course 2 - we enjoyed pan roasted true code with prawn nantua sauce, roasted fingerling potatoes and sauteed spinach. The fish was cooked to perfection, outstanding.  The sauce was absolutely amazing and very flavorful.

Course 3 – Vanilla creme brulee with fresh whipped cream and local pears.  This is one of my all time favorite deserts and it is made 100% perfect here, it also goes very well with a nice glass of 20 year tawny port.

This is a really great deal for some really great gourmet food.  Check them out at http://www.backwinebar.com/index.htm

Spud Point Crab Company at Bodega Bay

18 Sep

Spud Point Crab Company, Bodega Bay

While on a recent trip to Bodega Bay we decided to check out this tiny restaurant on the bay called the Spud Point Crab Company that we had read about on Yelp, figured it was worth a try.

According to their website: Spud Point Crab Company, which opened its doors on July 10, 2004, is a family-operated business owned by Tony and Carol Anello.  Tony has been fishing commercially for 35 years; Spud Point Crab Company is a dream-come-true for Tony and his wife, Carol.  Tony provides all the fresh fish from his own boat and that of his son and brother. Carol and daughter Lisa run the unique, 350 square foot shop.

Spud Point Crab Company is a truly old style Fishermen’s Wharf.  They catch and smoke their own “Wild King Salmon,” which is the best according to all that taste it. You can watch the live crab go into the large cooker that is right outside the shop. Watch them clean the crab you select. If you can’t wait to take the crab home, tables are provided outside — with a view of the boats and the bay — and tools to crack the crab, sauce, butter and lemon.

This little restaurant on Bodega Bay features Carol’s Famous Clam Chowder, voted best chowder 4 years in a row. Next is their Crab Sandwich with fresh picked crab meat and their homemade sauce served on a soft roll. They are also famous for their homemade crab cakes.

We decided to try their specialties, the chowder and the crab sandwich.  We ordered at the counter (there is no seating inside) then got our food and sat outside at the tables which had a great view of the harbor right across the street.

The clam chowder was absolutely off the hook delicious. I’m not usually a huge fan of chowder but theirs was outstanding.  The flavors were bold and tasty and had me hooked at the first spoonful. Once you start you cannot stop, their clam chowder was THE best I’ve ever had, and I’ve been to Boston several times… this chowder was better..  I highly recommend you stop by here and try the chowder if you’re ever in Bodega Bay.

The crab sandwich was equally good, and it was fully loaded with crab that was very tasty.

Everything hit the spot and we had a great lunch while in Bodega Bay.  I love finding small places off the beaten path that turn out to be really good.  The internet is a great resource.
