Worthy Brewing in Bend, Oregon

5 Apr

In case you were not aware, there are a lot of breweries in Bend, Oregon.

You’ve probably heard of Deschutes Brewery and maybe 10 Barrel, Good Life, Cascade Lakes Brewing, Boneyard, Solstice, Silver Moon or one of the other of the many breweries in Bend. There are a lot.  Personally, I’ve been to nearly all of them over the past year while traveling for work in the area, it’s been fun exploring the culinary scene there.

Well, I have to tell you that now, there’s a brand new brewery that just opened in Bend – called Worthy Brewing Company and I have to note that it is now #1 in my book for best  Brew Pub in Bend Oregon.

Worthy is located at 495 NE Bellevue Drive, Bend, Oregon http://www.worthybrewing.com/

This brewery and restaurant are a sight to see, it’s a large industrial modern building with an outdoor raised bed hop garden, hop green house, a full scale brewery and a very nice restaurant section.  The wood rafters and the bar top in the restaurant are all made from recovered wood from an old insane asylum in Oregon where the movie “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” was filmed.  So right from the start, this place already has built-in history, that’s pretty cool.  Needless to say the ambiance is outstanding.

Worthy Brewing Company

Hop Garden

They have a very good seasonal chalk board beer menu at Worthy. They not only serve their own beers, which are all very good, they also have guest taps with other beers and ciders from all over the west.

Beer List

The food is what really pushes this place to #1 from day 1. It is outstanding! They have a really nicely tiled wood fired pizza oven that they use to make great tasting pizza’s and entree’s.  I’ve been there 4x’s so far and every thing I’ve eaten has been excellent.  Some of their pizza’s have a wow factor with their creativity using a melding of delicious ingredients with a great tasting wood fired pizza crust.

Irish Pizza

To round it all out, service was impeccable.  I could not have asked for anything better.  My beer glass never ever sits empty, and my food is always served promptly.

Two big thumbs up for Worthy Brewing Company!

Fat Rabbit Public House

20 Feb

Decided to head over to The Fat Rabbit Public House on Sutter Street in Old Town Folsom for lunch today.

Needless to say I was not disappointed. I had the pieorgies appetizer and the special of the day, catfish tacos.

The food was very good and tasted great washing it all down with a Belgian White style beer called Hoegaarden.

Two thumbs up, I really like this place!

Water Grill in Los Angeles

16 Dec

I had the extreme pleasure of dining at the Water Grill in Los Angeles on company business while in Southern California this past week. The ambiance, service and food were absolutely fantastic.  The best way to describe this restaurant is to refer to their website which offers the following  definition and industry reviews.

Water Grill is the ultimate example of fine dining in Los Angeles. Hailed as “the best seafood in Southern California” by the internationally recognized Zagat Guide, Water Grill has consistently offered dazzling fish preparations of superior quality and freshness.
“…Each element on the plate is a standout, yet together the flavors are married to perfection in a harmonious presentation inspired by nature.”StarChefs

Inspired, adventurous and inventive sums up the Water Grill. Praised by Zagat Survey as Los Angeles’ top seafood restaurant since the day it opened, Water Grill has become an institution of excellence. In service, food, presentation, décor, ambiance and overall guest experience, this Downtown favorite exceeds all expectations.” Downtown LA Dining Magazine

“Warm deco stylings inspire the gleaming luxe raw bar, with intimate booths tucked on one side and a lively, airy dining room on the other accented with auburn wood, marble columns, white tablecloths, cushioned chairs and booths. Theatergoers, investment bankers and downtown-based tourists comprise the lively crowd.”  City Search, LA

My dinner started with Wild Fijian Big Eye Tuna Tartar with thai red chili and green papaya

The entree was a delicious Wild Columbia River Sturgeon pan roasted with horseradish cream, toasted walnuts, and roasted beet risotto.

To top it all off, desert was a divine Tahitian Vanilla Creme Brulee’ with Orange Cognac Caramel, Mandarin Orange Sorbet and Cardamom Churros.

To drink we had a great Frogs Leap Chardonay from Napa and at desert I tried a Yalumba Tawny Port from Australia that was very nice.

Blue Nami in Folsom

15 Dec

My wife and I enjoy good sushi and we’ve been many times to a variety of the local sushi restaurants in Folsom.

Recently a new sushi place opened in the new Palladio Mall in Folsom, called Blue Nami. I hadn’t had a chance to try them out yet when recently my good friend Tom told me about his experiences there and highly recommended I try the place out, he said not only was the food great, but the prices were outstanding.

So the next opportunity I got, my wife and I ventured over to Blue Nami in Folsom at the new Palladio Mall and we were impressed as soon as we stepped in the door. The decor was really well done and very unique. We were immediately seated and met with our waitress soon after.

We checked out the menu and found that all their house rolls were 50% off, all the time. They have a great menu with some very good combinations. We tried several different rolls and enjoyed each and every one. Everything was delicious and tasted fresh. Our waitress was very attentive and helpful with our selections.

The bill was the best part, the total cost was literally half of what we’ve been paying everywhere else, AND the food was all good and fresh.

We look forward to going back soon to try more of their sushi rolls. Two thumbs up for Blue Nami

Smash Burger in Folsom

29 Aug

The NorCal Burger with fries

Last year a Northern California burger joint opened in Folsom on E. Bidwell Blvd.  Smash Burger was highly anticipated as a restaurant that makes burgers really well and has some unique combinations of ingredients.  I was also told they also have very good shakes made with Dryer’s ice cream.

I had to go see what it was all about so I made plans to stop by there for lunch.
Smash Burger is located in Folsom at 703 E. Bidwell near Wales St.

I decided to try the signature NorCal Smash Burger which consisted of Brie Cheese, Apple wood smoked Bacon, sliced balsamic-marinated tomatoes, grilled onions, lettuce and mayo on a sourdough bun.

It was a good burger, had a very good presentation, service was nice and the burger and fries were tasty.  The combo of flavors was good, but I must admit, it was not my favorite, I think I will try a regular Smash burger next time. I don’t think the brie mix worked for me.

All in all it was a good experience, next time I’m going to try something else on their menu to see what else they have.

As of today 8-29-11 Smash Burger has a 50% off deal on Groupon – $6 for $12 worth of food.
This 50% off Groupon coupon deal can be found at http://gr.pn/qE18dB

Check out Smash Burger sometime and let me know what you think of their food – feel free to add your comments below.
